The Camera Monitoring System (CMS) has significantly improved driving safety with its capabilities in blind spot monitoring, night vision, and providing a clear view in rainy, foggy, and icy conditions. Additionally, CMS can reduce aerodynamic drag, improve fuel efficiency, and show clear advantages in commercial vehicles and electric cars. However, this new market is still in its early stages, and product promotion faces various challenges, including high costs, consumer habits, user experience, and the reliability of electronic systems.

Today, let's talk about the display module -one of the core components of the CMS system, its performance requirements in the industry development process, and some of the existing challenges.

The central role of display screen modules.

The current CMS system consists of three main parts: cameras, display screens, and system controllers. Further breakdown includes display screen modules, camera modules, controllers, wiring harnesses, and structural components.

As the direct interface between the user and the vehicle, the display screen module is where the driving experience is most directly perceived. For a product like the CMS system that is crucial for driving safety, the requirements for its display screen and product stability are more stringent compared to general in-vehicle controls and entertainment screens. On one hand, it needs to be sufficiently clear so that the information can be viewed without being affected by the interior lighting conditions, ensuring comfort during prolonged observation. On the other hand, structurally, it also needs to ensure that it remains stable and reliable for at least 5-10 years of vehicle use.

A high-quality display screen module is not only about enhancing the overall technological and luxurious feel of the vehicle, but more importantly, it ensures driving safety and provides a comfortable visual experience. In this article, the editor consulted leading in-vehicle screen suppliers in the industry to learn about the current performance requirements and future development trends of CMS display screen modules. Together with industry experts, they discussed how to meet high-performance standards while addressing cost and market acceptance issues.

In the CMS system, in order to provide consumers with a comfortable user experience and ensure their safety, a qualified display screen module should have at least the following seven key performance aspects:
1. Automotive-grade temperature resistance:The display screen module must be able to withstand extreme temperature changes. The common automotive-grade requirement is to function normally within -35 to 85 degrees Celsius, while higher-quality products can maintain performance stability within the range of -40 to 90 degrees Celsius.
2. Appearance and quality feel:In terms of exterior design, the screen module needs to adopt high standards of craftsmanship, such as 3A treatment for glass cover plates and integrated black bonding technology. On the driver's side, it should also integrate touch functionality to enhance the overall grade of the vehicle interior and improve the user's tactile experience.
3. Display Performance:High resolution, wide color gamut, high contrast ratio, and large viewing angles are key indicators for measuring screen display quality. Additionally, controlling the phenomenon of low-temperature drifting is crucial to ensure color and brightness consistency in different environments.
4. Electromagnetic Interference Resistance:In the complex electromagnetic environment of a vehicle, the screen module needs to have good Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) performance to ensure stable operation.
5. Vibration Resistance Performance:For commercial vehicles and construction machinery, in particular, the screen module needs to be designed structurally to withstand vehicle vibrations, ensuring the product's stable and reliable operation.
6. Chips and Algorithms:The screen module needs to integrate advanced chips and algorithms to enable intelligent functions such as Blind Spot Detection (BSD), reverse camera vision, door opening alerts, and distance display. This requires the screen to not only have excellent display capabilities but also possess fast image processing capabilities.
7、Reliability Testing:High stability means that the screen can avoid black screens or malfunctions during long-term use, typically over 5 years.Ensuring long-term stability requires not only high-quality raw materials and sophisticated manufacturing processes but also long-term reliability testing of the product to simulate various extreme conditions that may be encountered during extended operation.

Pain Point: The Challenge of Balancing Cost and Performance
In the current resistance faced by the expansion of CMS products, cost is undoubtedly a determining factor. And this is a dilemma facing industry professionals:high-quality screen modules inevitably come with higher costs, but low-cost modules will inevitably sacrifice some performance, affecting the user experience.

The most typical example is the current mainstream choice of LCD screens, which are prone to slow response times in low temperatures, leading to increased system delays in cold environments and potentially impacting driving safety. To address this issue, some manufacturers add heating modules to the module, while others opt for OLED modules that perform better in low temperatures. Undoubtedly, the heating module will add certain costs, and OLED automotive-grade screens are currently limited in supply and generally more expensive.

According to information: For the LCD screen module alone, the cost of a high-quality 15-inch screen (with touch functionality on the left side) in the commercial vehicle market may exceed 1000 RMB. In the passenger vehicle market, even for a screen module around 7 inches with touch and heating functions, the cost can also exceed 1000 RMB. The cost of a screen module without heating functionality can be reduced, but this may sacrifice performance in extreme weather conditions.

Technology Trends and Market Prospects
With the maturity of new display technologies such as OLED, Mini/Micro LED, the performance of display screen modules will be further enhanced. These technologies not only provide higher resolution and contrast but also bring better visual effects and lower power consumption. With the advancement of technology, screen costs are also expected to decrease to a more suitable range, leading to a wider application of CMS systems in the passenger car market. On the other hand, screen module suppliers are looking forward to further market expansion, aiming to reduce costs through large-scale production.
From a market development perspective, as consumer expectations for the level of vehicle intelligence continue to rise, the acceptance of CMS systems will gradually increase. CMS systems are expected to become a standard product in the era of smart cars. This requires OEMs to continuously improve overall design and user experience, and for technology and the industry chain to mature further in order to reduce costs and meet consumer needs.
Currently in the CMS market, the first area to expand application is in the commercial vehicle sector where there is a more urgent need for blind spot monitoring. In the passenger car market, there is a need for a benchmark model to drive the overall market, such as the appearance of the AR-HUD product on the popular Mercedes-Benz S-Class in 2020, which directly led to the rapid rise of the HUD industry. Which company will be the next benchmark enterprise? Wenshi, Yangwang, or Xiaomi Cars? Welcome everyone to join the group for discussion.
